Prahlad Karmakar was a classically trained studio artist from Calcutta (now Kolkata), best known for painting realistic scenes. This untitled artwork shows a music concert, perhaps one that began late in the evening. Audience members lie sprawled in the music room while musicians playing the harmonium, tambura and tabla occupy centre stage. The viewer of the painting assumes the position of an audience member, who is witnessing the performance from a corner of the room.
