Nandalal Bose is one of the most significant Indian artists from the twentieth century, associated with the contextual modernism that was developed in Santiniketan, Bengal, where Rabindranath Tagore had established a university. The subject of human figures located within their own surroundings was a great draw for Bose. This drawing captures the dignity of labour as well as its elegance. A woman is engrossed in the act of cooking, surrounded by her kitchen utensils. Bose composed several such tiny works in which he attempted to capture people at their chores, or going about their different vocations, in an intimate relationship with the objects of their work, depicted against the humble, simple backgrounds of rural life.
