Sanat Chatterjee was one of the last-remaining practitioners of the Bengal School of painting. He studied under Asit Kumar Haldar at the Government College of Arts and Crafts in Lucknow, and later under Kshitindranath Majumdar at Allahabad. Shiva and his companion Uma, symbolised through the crescent moon in the background, are seen in a loving embrace in this untitled painting. Both deities are painted with flowing hair—Uma’s tresses resemble a cascading river, while Shiva’s locks spread like the roots of the tree placed behind him. Seated on clouds in the evening sky, the cosmogonic deities appear to protect the world from all evil. The soft palette of the painting as well as its stylised elegance are familiar tropes of the Bengal School.
