Around the 1890s, numerous printmaking studios were established in Calcutta, each working with different artists to produce images on the same theme. Among them, paintings of Sundaris (‘beautiful women’), which featured sensual portrayals of courtesans, became popular. Texts like An Educated Woman in Prostitution offer frank glimpses into the lives of cultured courtesans like her, who were expected to entertain with music, poetry recital and other arts. The figure in this lithograph is engaged in a typical act of grooming—by combing her hair.
