Gouache on paper

Trained as a painter and sculptor, Gopal Ghose—a founding member of the Calcutta Group—explored multiple visual vocabularies for representing nature. He was particularly drawn to the modernist languages of Expressionism and Cubism and used them to play with forms and colours in his nature paintings. He travelled extensively within India to paint and concentrated almost exclusively on depicting flora and landscapes. His paintings of flowers, particularly, stand out earning him recognition as a colourist. In this painting, he colours the flower and the background in the same bright, almost surreal, shade of lilac. The foreground blends into the background and distinct white spots appear like dots of light on the tips of the flowers.
