Although most identify the name ‘Eden Gardens’ with the iconic cricket stadium in Calcutta (now Kolkata), it was originally borrowed from an adjacent park housing a Buddhist pagoda, which can be seen in this poster published by the East India Railway Press. The garden, then called Auckland Circus Garden, was opened to the public in 1840, its construction supervised by Emily and Fanny Auckland, and their brother George Eden—who was the Governor-General of India during 1836-42. The Tazaung pagoda was originally built in Prome, Myanmar, and brought to Calcutta in 1854 by Lord Dalhousie, Governor-General of India from 1848 to 1856, after the second Anglo-Burmese War (1852-1853).
