Kartick Chandra Pyne was a pioneering modernist artist who blended elements from folk art with western artistic traditions like Surrealism. His paintings are filled with fabulous creatures from the rich store of Indian mythological narratives. Retaining a hint of the fantastical, Pyne re-imagines the conventional iconography of the Dakshin Kali (indicated by her uplifted right arm) by giving it a fierce, totemic appearance. Her orange tongue protrudes from a pitch-black face and her body manifests as a hibiscus forest.
