B. C. Law, an Indian painter from Bengal and the founder and secretary of the Society of Fine Arts, Calcutta, was largely a self-taught academic realist. He was admired for his skill in handling transparent water-based colours and oil paints. He found himself drawn to scenes from mythology and literature while his popularity came from painting young women whom he depicted with an almost photographic realism. In this work, he paints a young woman draped in a light blue saree stretched out on a bed, her hands tucked into a pillow while she sleeps peacefully.
