Tempera on board National Art Treasure (non-exportable work)
This Untitled work in distinct impressionist brushstrokes is likely to fox admirers of Jamini Roy’s art for its vocabulary and composition that are far removed from those in his well-known folk-inspired works. Yet, it is a testimony of a time when Roy was yet to rediscover his art and was painting in the popular European style he learnt at college. Nevertheless, the work impresses for the surety of its lines, a major determiner of his later oeuvre. The most important highlight of the work, however, is the conspicuous human absence—a minimalist approach that Roy would employ to great effect later on.
