Dorothy Newsome, the illustrator of this print of Ghutiari Sharif—located in South 24 Parganas of West Bengal, and home to the dargah (shrine) of Pir Ghazi Mubarak Ali Sahab—was an interesting personality in the history of Indian advertising. She worked on several magazine and book illustrations as well. She was in India in the 1920s, when she was asked to design posters for colonial-era railway companies. The use of Bengali and Urdu titles at the bottom of the printed image signify that this advertisement was primarily aimed towards Muslim pilgrims.
