Sunil Das was one of the most significant artists and teachers from late twentieth century Bengal and India. Known for his iconic drawings of bulls and horses, Das painted across several oeuvres, each one distinctive and to which he brought his singular vision. In an interview, he had said, “In 1962, I went to Spain, where I was fascinated by the bull fights”. Like a latter-day Ernest Hemingway, he used his bold brushstrokes and thick lines to suggest the vitality and passion that he saw in the animal.
