In his vast repertoire of distinctive art, Jamini Roy painted quite a few works in the Byzantine style, which he would have learnt about through books, or so believe the scholars. Some of those are on Christian themes. This one, however, is a rare example of Byzantine style being used to convey essentially Indian characters, Hanuman and Jatayu in this case, giving expression to an important episode from the Ramayana. The highlight of the work is the creation of the painting through a mosaic of uneven polygons that fill up the surface of the painting, a characteristic of Byzantine art.
