Kshitindranath Majumdar was deeply inspired by Sri Chaitanya’s Vaishnavism and trained in jatra (rural dramatic performances), kirtan (community devotional songs) and other ritualistic performances in the villages of Bengal. Often called a ‘saint artist,’ he was tutored by Abanindranath Tagore and successfully combined available influences—like the wash technique, forms from the Ajanta frescoes and Rajput paintings—to imagine Puranic and mythological tales charged with his understanding of the bhakti philosophy. This painting depicts Sri Chaitanya with his follower Vasudev Sarvabhauma. To convey the spiritual tenor of the scene, the artist uses soft hues to create an effulgent quality—as if the pictorial space is overwhelmed by the luminous presence of Chaitanya.
