Born in Italy, Olinto Ghilardi contributed significantly towards shaping the course of the Indian art movement in the late nineteenth century. Introducing European art techniques to Calcutta (now Kolkata), Ghilardi played a vital role as Abanindranath Tagore’s mentor, while also carrying representative views of India to European countries. In this picturesque view of a riverside scene on a clear day in Bengal, the building imposes its presence over the boats and human activity on the river.
