Shuvaprasanna studied at the Indian College of Art, Rabindra Bharati University, Calcutta (now Kolkata), in 1969. An active member of the Calcutta Painter’s group, urban themes are a constant in his work. Beset by problems and politics, but possessing great potential, Kolkata has remained his abiding inspiration as he absorbs and responds to its upheavals, the tumult of its masses, its frequent political turbulence and the everyday issues of urban humanity. His artistic and personal concerns lie with urban decay and an anxiety regarding the collapse of urban culture. This is also visible in his cityscapes which are curiously devoid of human presence; empty lanes and bylanes speak of the absence of the multitudes that populate this crowded city. Metamorphosis describes the stagnation of human life within the city, the idea physically manifesting itself on the painted canvas as formerly live humans begin to crystallise into still, rock-like structures.
