Art Lab

DAG’s flagship education programme for schools, Art Lab is a travelling pop-up exhibition on Indian modern art, that transforms classrooms into museums and creates an immersive, participatory learning environment for learners.

Over two weeks a core group of 30 students work together to critically engage with the exhibition and the curatorial process. They develop creative responses and new curatorial concepts and take over the exhibition—reconfiguring the display to present their own perspectives on art and art history. Adaptable to a variety of learner levels, from first generation learners to advanced leaners, Art Lab is currently available in both English and Bengali.

Flow: An Enquiry into the Freedom Movement

A series of workshops that equipped educators with an enquiry-based toolkit developed specially by Flow India around DAG’s historic exhibition March to Freedom in 2022. With over 35 participating educators from 21 schools across the country, the programme has had two successful iterations.

Archive Case Files: School Edition

Archive Case Files is a learning module where students explore and analyse archival objects and learn how to construct historical narratives using varied primary sources.

A curated collection of historical objects from the DAG collection relating to the theme will be presented to the students such as photographs, letters, postcards, newspaper clippings etc. Stepping in to the shoes of historians, students will be given the challenge of unearthing details of the soldier’s experiences of the War. The current module that runs for 2 days for 2.5 hours each day, looks at the participation of Indian soldiers in World War 1.

Through the two workshops they will learn how to document, interpret and ‘read’ the archival materials to gather information, and share their findings with their peers and teachers using a specially designed creative workbook.

Archive Case Files: College Edition

A series of participatory workshops with undergraduate students on using visual primary material like images, artefacts and ephemera to expand the representation and memorialisation of significant historical events, through a curated selection of postcards on Indian soldiers in the First World War from the DAG collection.

Over the course of the workshop days, students engage with the process of image-making by sharing their engagement with the archival material and research in the form of photobooks. This 4-day (12-hour) archival learning programme, spread across a period of 8-10 days, comprises of interactive workshops with a core-group of 30 students from humanities disciplines conducted by the DAG team.

The workshops involve activities such as close-looking at visual sources, learning the steps of archival research, and close reading of critical texts among other modes of engagement. We also collaborate with academics, visual artists and archivists to incorporate guest presentations to enrich this art-integrated module.

Why is Art Weird?

'Why is Art Weird?' is an art engagement workshop designed to introduce students to different art styles, mediums, and concepts in Indian modern art using interactive methods, games, and visual examples to challenge the idea that modern art is difficult, inaccessible or too strange and removed from our life experiences.

The workshop aids in developing a deeper appreciation and understanding of various kinds of modern art while also encouraging their own creative exploration. Current modules of Why is Art Weird explore abstraction as a concept and artistic form and have been designed for students from grades six to seven. Each module is of ninety minutes, and can take place in a classroom, transforming it into a gallery and atelier for the duration of the workshop.

My World through Art

An art engagement workshop designed for the classroom setting where students explore artworks from the DAG collection and use them to express their thoughts, learnings, and opinions, which equips them with tools for visual literacy, familiarity with Indian art, and garners their ability to articulate cohesively and creatively their learnings and experiences.

There are three modules currently which have been developed on the basis of curriculum research on the topics of emotions, occupations and gender for students of grades three to five. Each module is designed to spread across two class periods (a total duration of 80 minutes) and can be conducted in a classroom setting.

This workshop is based on the Articulate Framework, an art-integration framework developed for a collaboration with Teach for India and has been implemented in several Teach For India classrooms across Kolkata.

Apprenticeship Programme

A paid opportunity for young students from diverse disciplines to participate in the exciting world of museums and arts organizations by introducing them to the whole gamut of activities that go into building audience engagement around an exhibition or programme.

In addition to hands-on work experience, selected participants have access to a year-long learning module—with a series of workshops by leaders from arts organizations, culminating in a weekend programme designed and implemented by the participants, with the support of the DAG Museums team.

For many the apprenticeship programme is the first immersion in cultural work, opening career pathways in the field of art and art history. For others, the programme creates a community of lifelong arts and culture enthusiasts, while also honing professional skills.

For the last edition of the Apprenticeship Programme during DAG's annual 'The City as a Museum' festival, participants explored a variety of activities—from research and writing, to production, outreach, communications and documentation.

Participants of the Apprenticeship Programme are selected through an open call when new editions are announced here and on DAG's online platforms.

Museum Ambassadors

An experiential learning and apprenticeship programme for high school students in collaboration with arts education organisations, offering them a first-hand experience of working in a museum, learning about the art and history, and translating their learnings to develop museum experiences for their peers.

This programme offers the chance to learn how museums and cultural institutions operate, and to experience what it is like to work in a professional environment. It prepares students for future leadership roles, inculcating skills and capacities for teamwork, planning, design, communication, and critical thinking.

The first edition was presented in collaboration with ThinkArts. In the second edition, presented in collaboration with History for Peace, the Museum Ambassadors looked closely at artworks, engaged in thought provoking dialogues, and enthusiastically participated to develop, plan and design guided tours for our young visitors around DAG’s ‘March to Freedom’ exhibition at Indian Museum.

Gallery Teach-In

A unique academic engagement where professors from diverse disciplines bring their classrooms into the galleries, explore connections between their curriculum and the collection on view and experiment with new ways of teaching through art.

This site-specific engagement also offers a different experience for learners, to explore what it might feel like to learn in a gallery, using a rich visual repository to discuss, question, and destabilize existing narratives.

The launch of this programme at DAG’s ‘March to Freedom’ exhibition at the Indian Museum was successful thanks to professors from esteemed institutions such as Gurudas College, Presidency University, Jadavpur University, Loreto College and Adamas University who conducted their lectures within the gallery and added new layers of meaning to the exhibition.
