This artwork is a view of the Navaratna Temple or the Black Pagoda in colonial Calcutta’s Chitpore Bazaar, drawn by Charles D’Oyly—an official working for the East India Company’s civil service—for Views of Calcutta and its Environs. The temple, which was built by the notorious zamindar (a feudal lord who collected revenues from peasants he leased land to) and deputy collector, Govindaram Mitter, was constructed between 1730 and 1731. The temple was affected by numerous cyclones and earthquakes before it finally collapsed sometime before 1813. D’Oyly captures the temple in its already dilapidated state with trees growing through its towers.
