Ramendranath Chakravarty was trained in etching, aquatint and drypoint from the famous printmaker Muirhead Bone, known for his work as a war artist in both the First and the Second World Wars. In 1943, he became the Principal at the Government School of Art, Calcutta (now Kolkata) and introduced graphic art into the curriculum of the school. Known primarily as a printmaker, Chakravorty’s paintings reveal his mastery and skill as an artist. Under the guidance of Nandalal Bose, he began to focus on documenting the daily life of ordinary people. In this painting, the artist has deftly portrayed a group of women who are working together, creating a kalamkari textile.
