This photograph depicts the Taj Mahal, possibly taken from the Mehtab Garden (also called 'Moonlight Garden') across the river Yamuna. It was built by Emperor Babur, and decades later, it was beautified by Shah Jahan with fountains, trees, and airy pavilions. The Taj gardens were altered for systematic plantation, but the Mehtab Garden remained largely obscure to the British eye.

Owner of the Randolph Bezzant Holmes Co., a photographic studio in Peshawar until 1947, Holmes was a British commercial photographer in pre-partitioned India, based in the North-West Frontier Province, during the years 1918-1947. He documented much of Northern India and Central Asia through his camera.
