Gaganendranath Tagore attempted to represent visual experiences on to his painted surfaces, either directly from nature as he saw it or from memory. In his representations, he was aided by his preferred technique of Japanese brushwork. In this postcard, he paints an expanse of darkness. Grim reminders of industrial modernity stretch along the horizon as tall factory chimneys release columns of smoke into the night sky. Some flickering specks of light appear in the foreground, in the distance, and below the painting, which reminds him of Rabindranath Tagore’s words, ‘Even the darkness bears the signs of your divine touch.’
