Part of a series of twenty-eight drawings by William Hodges, an English painter, this is a view of the Dutch settlement of Chinsura in Bengal. One of the earliest landscape painters in India, Hodges travelled through Bengal in 1781-82. His ship would have sailed past this settlement, which was located on the west bank of the Bhagirathi River. The settlement was home not just to the factories of the Dutch East India Company but also to the Dutch Governor and his council, reminding us about our polycolonial past.
