Around the 1890s, numerous printmaking studios were established in Calcutta, each working with different artists to produce images on the same theme. Among them, paintings of Sundaris (‘beautiful women’), sensual portrayals of courtesans, became popular. This image features Sushila Sundari, with the word ‘Modesty’ inscribed next to her name in English. A hand-mirror is featured here as another item that was significant in the typical courtesan’s kit of grooming products, along with combs, perfumes and essential oils.
