Designed and printed by a publishing house called House of Origin in Calcutta (now Kolkata), this is an advertising poster for The Eastern Bengal Railway Company, one of the many which owned and operated railway tracks in colonial India. The print shows a view of the Kalighat temple, dedicated to the Hindu Goddess Kali, in Calcutta, with its name inscribed in Devanagari at the lower edge. The presence of a crowd of devotees within the temple complex was aimed at emphasising the religious site’s popularity, and an attempt to lure Hindu crowds from the northern part of the subcontinent to Calcutta, in order to boost ticket sales for the company.
