In this volume, Iconic Masterpieces of Modern Indian Art, now in its fifth edition, we trace three centuries of artistic endeavour—from the late eighteenth to the late twentieth century—bringing together works that illuminate the depth, diversity and transformative nature of Indian art. The collection presents a remarkable confluence of cultures and practices. While European artists such as the Daniells, Charles D’Oyly, Lord Weeks and Bauer introduced India’s landscapes, monuments and people to a global audience, local responses took shape in the Early Bengal School oils and the vibrant Kalighat pata tradition, which merged folk idioms with emerging academic styles. These interactions laid the foundation for the flowering of modern Indian art, a field in which DAG has long focused its efforts. – Ashish Anand, CEO and Managing Director, DAG |
