Robert Motherwell explained that modern abstraction is mysticism in aesthetic disguise; the same applies to Sohan Qadri’s work. The red, visually similar to an eye might be seen as a symbol of spiritual awakening. Is the cerulean blue the primordial sea? Is it the Eternal Mother carrying her ever-renewing seeds? Qadri’s successful experiments with medium come through as we see the contrasting colours placed deftly together. In the artist’s search for transcendence, he arrived at the Indian philosophical concept of shunyata or void from which all life emanates and into which all forms disappear—this work is perhaps a visual representation of this concept.
