Watercolour and ink on cardboard pasted on mount board
Sunil Das’s portraits of people from the margins of society were mostly rendered in a dark palette, often with a hint of macabre surrealism. Head, here, depicts one such figure with a shocked, almost fearful, expression, a pointer to the atrocities faced by ordinary people, particularly women, in their daily lives. The background adds layers to further highlight the tension.
