The horse and the bull have been Sunil Das’s signature themes, with his drawings of the horse in motion and repose commanding instant recall. Drawing on his earliest observations of horses at Calcutta’s racetracks, Das usually portrayed a moment of frozen motion in the horses’ gallop, reminiscent of high-speed stop motion photography—exuding their raw animal power, every muscle and sinew flexing. He creates in Horses, however, a more relaxed moment of the three horses together, capturing an entirely different and calm side of the equine.
