Sunil Das received wide recognition for drawings that captured the speed, power and energy of horses in expressive charcoal lines. For him, they represented his own youthful, untamed spirit but also connoted a sense of liberation. If not at Calcutta’s racecourse, Das spent his time observing and sketching them at the stables of Calcutta’s mounted police. In this work, Das produces a strong characterisation, drawing out the energy and tempo of the animal through his skilled draughtsmanship, building a bond between the subject and himself.
