India has a rich tradition of decorative wooden toys and Jyoti Bhatt’s Untitled painting is an ode to the many anonymous craftsmen who fashion these. Featuring a colour palette that’s used by the toymakers, Bhatt paints here animals and birds that take one on a journey of nostalgia for India’s indigenous art and craft history. Be it Natungram toys of West Bengal, Channapatna toys of Karnataka, or, for that matter, the Kondapalli toys of Andhra Pradesh, Bhatt’s painting is a homage to the talent of these toymakers.
