Jyoti Bhatt has been fascinated with the motif of the lamp since childhood. He thinks it could have something to do with the meaning of his name ‘Jyoti’ (light). Whatever the reason for his love of its form, Bhatt has explored it extensively on canvas, paper (seen here), and prints, even photographing them as still-life. The viewer might see them as charming and playful renditions or as symbols of light, purity, and hope. But they are best enjoyed for their simplicity and minimalism—as in the work presented here.
