Even though Jyoti Bhatt’s identity as a photo-documenter is the most well-known aspect of his personality as an artist, he experimented with various genres of painting early on in his career. Abstract expressionism was one genre that he essayed vigorously, especially during and after his study stints in Italy and New York, and this work painted around the time he was studying abroad, is a great example of his style at that time. Rock-like shapes float in green textureless ether but each contains within it a complex world that is animated with discernible kinetic movements.
