The fusion of Jyoti Bhatt’s two recurrent motifs—the human face in profile with the peacock within—depicted here, connotes to him pictorial possibilities for its frequent presence. As a child, Bhatt would often see birds frolicking around his house, one of them being the peacock. These images, imprinted as a childhood memory, have been excavated by the artist in conscious and subliminal ways. His repetitive placement of this image, placed within a square with two or three areas of flat colour, explores its potential as a pictorial motif.
