Painter, printmaker, photographer Jyoti Bhatt, who studied at M. S. University, Baroda, has been a lifelong experimenter. Exposed to cubism and abstract expressionism on his study stints abroad—in Naples and New York—he tried out many styles in his work before arriving at a style inspired by traditional folk designs. This Untitled work, however, pre-dates his foreign sojourn and is a young artist’s essay in creating a cubist still-life with aesthetic result; Bhatt would go on to create many individuated still-lifes in his career, most notably with lamps.
