Chittaprosad spent the better part of his early career chronicling the oppression of the weak, most notably the victims of man-made famine in Bengal in 1943. A sensitive artist and a former member of the Communist Party, he couldn’t have remained unaffected by the goings-on in East Pakistan in 1970-71; also, because he was born in the region when it was part of the British Indian empire. And, he couldn’t have created a more germane work in the honour of the nation that successfully fought its oppressors to become a new entity in this very year. A close examination of the work reveals the presence of all relevant symbols of oppression as well as hope for the new nation.
