Chittaprosad’s woodcuts of an idyllic countryside life were idealised, borne of a view that rural communities were spared the taint of urbanised societies. In this village scene, a pair of buffaloes is the most dominant aspect of the print as they graze in grasslands against a setting of low hills and furrowed fields. Young attendants little more than children tend to the cattle while the elders, mere specks in the distance, attend to their chores. The deeply cut lines in the block create a dynamism that adds a sense of robustness to the print just as the artist might have wanted it.
