Laxman Pai started painting the Buddha in the 1950s, shortly before leaving for Paris in what would constitute an artistically stimulating period for him. Interestingly, a lot of Indian thematic series would be done by Pai during his Paris phase in styles that were profoundly personal and inspired by Western masters. This Untitled work is driven towards the theme of Buddha attaining nirvana, created with immense subtlety with emphasis on a singular strong line that ‘flows like a river of life’.
