It was at Sir J. J. School of Art, Bombay, where he studied, that Laxman Pai became interested in Indian themes, colours, miniature paintings, thereby imagining the heritage of his homeland from his own visual perspective. This was interesting because the education in the art school was largely based on British academic style. Further, it was the Goan life, its people, landscapes, and seascapes, that fascinated Pai. Experimenting in various mediums and styles, the artist creates these doll-like figures in an ode to traditional, anonymous toymakers in his own, inimitable style.
