The mother-child trope is, perhaps, essayed by almost every Indian artist, and yet, the renditions have been as different as possible, and uniquely refreshing. K. S. Kulkarni delivers his stamp of primitivism in creating a charming mother-child image in this Untitled work. It is an image in a rural setting, evident in the attire of the mother and the criss-crossing chik (bamboo blinds) patterns in the background. The mother has lifted the child playfully and the latter responds by returning her tender look. Kulkarni’s signature thick lines for the eye add gravitas to the woman’s persona.
