As early as 1950, K. S. Kulkarni had been sponsored by the Rockefeller Foundation to represent India at the International Arts Program, U.S.A. Dabbling with both figuration and abstraction, he came to be known for art that carried a sense of ‘Indianness’ while absorbing Western influences. Kulkarni was not just a master draughtsman but also a skilled and balanced colourist—as reflected in this Untitled work. The colours are soft and gentle in this cubist landscape depicting grey skies, blue waters and red brick human habitation. The colour balance and harmony enrich the tonal quality of the work.
