J. Swaminathan once called fellow New Delhi-based artist K. S. Kulkarni a ‘superb draftsman’. This Untitled work, of a couple in sexual union, shows Kulkarni’s dexterity with drawing, lucidly sketching out the figures in firm lines that have a cubist character, bearing a strong influence of Pablo Picasso. Kulkarni’s visual vocabulary had evolved out of his extensive global travels, a characteristic shared by many artists of his generation who had similar exposure to European modernism. Chief among them was F. N. Souza, who also went on to be a master of works similar to this one by Kulkarni here.
