The name of M. F. Husain is synonymous with horses. Husain painted wild and energetic horses exuding raw power, in a group or solo, throughout his career, in what has been interpreted as his ode to the life force that characterises the never ceasing rhythm of life on earth. In this late career work, he chooses an all-black palette to show a neighing horse with its head turned back, as if startled by a character or an event that has just preceded the scene of painting. The distorted, cubist body of the equine protagonist is quintessentially Husain.
