M. F. Husain was fascinated by the arid landscape of Rajasthan but rarely painted it—he was not a painter of landscapes—but this Untitled (Rajasthan Landscape), made in the 1960s, was part of a suite of works based on his travels to Udaipur and Chittaurgarh: the very symbol of resistance to Mughal might. This painting is a fine example of a muted colour palette in which one can sense the scattered remnants of battlements and fortifications that emanate a visual vocabulary of chivalry and valour.
