Drawn from an erotic comedy, That Obscure Object of Desire, a film directed by Luis Bunuel, is based on an old man’s love for a young woman who flirts outrageously with him while refusing to grant him any sexual favours. M. F. Husain was fascinated by the film and made a number of paintings—oils as well as watercolours—based on the theme of unrequited love and lust of which this is an example.
