Etching and aquatint on handmade paper
Anupam Sud’s visit to Japan in 1988 for a residency at Fukuoka Museum would prove fruitful also for the influence of Kabuki theatre in her choice of subjects. Inspired by the masks used by the actors as also their mask-like makeup, she developed a series of works using these as theatrical props. Persona plays on the theme of the mask and its ability to present different faces to the world with great impact even as the various elements on display are a nod to issues of femininity.
