Between 2004-07, Anupam Sud made what is nicknamed the Goddess series, of which Cosmic Dancer is a part. The series draws parallels between goddesses in traditional Hindu iconography and today’s woman. A bald nude bust is juxtaposed against Durga, the latter derived from the Basohli school of miniature painting. The sculptural nude rests her breasts on the picture frame, holding up both hands to show her ten fingers. The focus of this otherwise monochromatic work is the orange lotus that surmounts the Devi’s crown.
