At a time when graphic artists in India were non-existent and everyone painted in oils, Haren Das’s single-minded devotion to the graphic arts was indeed exceptional. He creates here a music band that plays to a humungous crowd as part of a procession. The technique combines the chemical reaction of water, sugar and varnish coming together to ultimately produce a granular wash effect, showing the remarkable interplay of shadow and light. The detailing of people in the crowd, musical instruments, and other elements, is exemplary.
