Idyllic life of rural Bengal, presented with a charm that evokes nostalgia, is the hallmark of woodcuts by Haren Das, who ploughed his furrow of printmaking at a time when it was not as lucrative as painting, nor as popular. This endearing little work captures two young friends catching fish on an afternoon by a pukur—small ponds that abound in rural Bengal, supplying the locals with their daily catch. The two could be a couple and the woman seems to have taken care in dressing up for the tryst as evident from the big flower in her bun.
