Amit Ambalal has tremendous capacity to give expression to the whimsical in everyday life, which he owes to an acute sense of observation, as is evident in this simple picture of a grey langur or a black-faced monkey walking surreptitiously over a grave. It’s the pose of the simian—framed against the tombstone—that infuses an element of play in the work, as there is not a soul in the flower-filled graveyard, apparently, except the viewer whose eye the langur catches and just bends a bit in defence at this sudden intrusion.
