Amit Ambalal’s paintings never fail to evoke a smirk or a laugh with humour that is so subtly inserted in its narrative. This acrylic on canvas, showing three young boys rendered in expressionistic strokes, would have seemed just another set of boys in conversation. But that wide red grin on the green boy on the right changes the work’s complexion, adding the possibility of a story there. The one in the centre seems to be narrating something funny in an animated manner, which brings glee to the face of his friend. The third one, however, is absorbed elsewhere.
