In the Bengali note accompanying the postcard illustration, Nandalal Bose had written how he could hear a dhaki play festival drums nearby. Inspired by the music, Bose’s illustration imagines the performer, dressed in an elaborate headpiece, who dances to the rhythm of his drum that is attached to his hip with a rope.
